The Shining (1980)

★★★☆ – (1980) – A recovering alcoholic moves his family to a closed hotel for the winter and quickly snaps. Doesn’t explain any methods behind Jack’s madness, of which there’s plenty of time to do. Instead, the long length is devoted to expository scenes that stretch as far as they can without breaking. Still, there’s enough claustrophobic tension and memorable scenes of terror to fill ten hotels.
